The Gibson ES-339 is really aimed at intermediate and above players. Of course, it offers excellent playability thanks to its more compact size, but the price tag is prohibitive for the majority of newer guitarists.

There's something, though, that I'd like to bring up. The price difference between the 335 and the 339 IS a big gulf when you look at new vs. new. But I can buy a fine used 335 right now for the same price as a new 339. I have found quite a few 335's in great condition, even mint for $1995 --- the typical discount price of a new 339.
